Working While Young

Adolescents who perform an economic job are often very busy. The main reasons why adolescents do some economic work are to pay for their studies, to have something to do in their free time, to learn responsibility, or because they really need money at home.

Young workers should have the opportunity to access decent jobs. Research shows systematically that young women and men are often marginalized. They have to overcome more barriers than adults to get- a decent job. Throughout the world, young people are three and a half times more likely to be unemployed. It is necessary to take measures to ensure that young people have access to education, training, and economic opportunities.

From my own experience, it is very difficult to work and study at the same time. However, I have no choice because I need to pay my expenses and support my son. It is also difficult because I have to go to sleep very late and I wake up very early to go to school. Although, at the end of the day I feel good and proud of myself for being able to support myself and my two-year-old son; the most precious thing that I have in my life. -Merianny Burgos

(Brayan returning home after a long day of work)

I have been working since I was 17 years old (It is clear that he had finished school.) I worked in construction and similar things, which I did to pay for extra things I wanted because in my house they only gave me exactly what was necessary and I wanted to be able to enjoy more things. Now, I am 20 years old and work in electricity. I am independent of my parents and I do not take care of them to survive in this world. I like my job, even though sometimes I get very stressed, but it’s part of what they call living. Honestly, I like the feeling of being self-sufficient. -Brayan Ramirez

(Elva when she arrives at home after work)

My first job was in an ice cream shop. I was 16 years old and the reason I worked was I wanted to pay for my personal things. Now at 23 years old, I think it was not necessary to work since it was very exhausting. Now that I am working to pay bills, I think it is more exhausting to have so many years working. However, I am glad to know that I can achieve many things with effort, for example, one month ago I bought a car that I really needed. I was able to purchase it with my own efforts and I am proud that I am able to support myself.- Elva Alida Perez
